Mini Silbury at Waden hill springs, April 2004.

In April I decided to visit Waden Spring after having witnessed the first flow of the Winterbourne River.
I had been aware of a small mound that is visible from West Kennet Long Barrow for many years but
had never actualy taken the time to look at it up close.
What I found amazed me. A large mound the same shape as Silbury hill but on a smaller scale.
The angles of the sides appear to be the same as Silbury and when viewed from the Palisade Enclosure site
both Silbury and the small mound appear to look the same.
Research  shows that William Stukeley noticed Something at this point but his sketches seems to show one or
two possible pond barrows.

William Stukeley sketch 1724

A History of Wiltshire Vol1 Pt1 P216.
'Disk Barrows, Avebury, Waden hill (SE end) approx 10906836.
In Stukeley's time it showed as a disk barrow partly cut by Roman road. Destroyed.'

View from the Palisade enclosure site.
A small spring in the foreground joins the Kennet river at the edge of the field.

View of the Pond on the right of the mound.
The pond that the spring feeds is totaly clear (not even a shopping trolley!)
and there are no signs of any rubbish that may have been tipped over the edge.

View of the Spring to the left of the mound.
The water is crystal clear and runs around the edge of the mound to feed a large pond on the right hand side.

Large Sarcen stone next to the spring.
This may once have been standing.
There are several small sarcens around the base of the mound

Rubbish dumped over the top.
Quite a large amount of rubbish and hardcore has recently been fly-tipped here.

Checking my air photos I found this one which was taken in mid December 2003
and shows Silbaby in the bottom lefthand corner.

Researching into Silbury sketches I noticed this.
What are the two people looking at?

What are these people resting on?

More coming soon!
